Over the last year, stories of property owners having their property taken over by “squatters” have appeared in the news with greater frequency. These stories across the country are notable not only for their quantity, but for the utterly brazen actions of squatters. These actions have deprived many property owners of their rightful possessions with disappointingly few options for recourse.
The Senate Committee on Local Government met yesterday to discuss the emerging issue. Texas must take action because, unfortunately, the state is seeing a rise in squatters as well. TCCRI's testimony to the committee highlights the egregious examples of adverse possession of property, as well as three recommendations that the Legislature may take to protect the rights of property owners.
