Continued failure to advance choice in education while controlling statewide offices and both chambers of the legislature would be a profound missed opportunity for conservatives in Texas.
Today’s charge on increasing educational opportunities in Texas is an important one, and TCCRI has long advocated for school choice in Texas for the very reasons stated in the premise of the committee’s charge. Indeed, the purpose of school choice is to “ensure that students and families have increased options to attend a high-quality school, regardless of circumstance.” Currently, circumstance dictates that approximately 61% of students in America attend traditional public schools to which they are geographically assigned.
It is often said that school choice already exists for families with the financial means to pay for private school tuition or to move to an area in which the public schools perform well. The drive to adopt and implement vouchers, tax-credit scholarships, education savings accounts, and other choice programs across the country is meant to equalize educational opportunity.
