Putting the Can at the Core: Powering Texas Recycling with Aluminum Cans

Given aluminum’s high value, the efficiency with which it can be recycled, and the environmental benefits of recycling it, no other material can rival it as a model for the circular economy. Through its own investment and innovation, the aluminum can manufacturing industry has become ultra-efficient at recycling this material. But the industry cannot singlehandedly solve the problem of the improper disposing of aluminum. In trying to improve its recycling, Texas’ leaders should focus on three general policies: urging consumers to be more dedicated recyclers, improving recycling infrastructure in the state, and creating a stable funding mechanism for this consumer education and improved infrastructure.
