Existing infrastructure makes Texas a natural leader in producing hydrogen.
Over the last several years Texas has benefited from increased energy production, solidifying the state as the country's number one energy producer. From crude oil and natural gas to wind and solar energy, Texas leads the way. The state is especially dominant in producing natural gas, providing for nearly one-third of the nation’s marketed natural gas. This existing industry and infrastructure makes Texas a natural leader in producing hydrogen. In fact, Texas is already among the top three hydrogen-producing states in the nation.
Presently, a majority of hydrogen produced in the U.S. is used “for refining petroleum, treating metals, producing fertilizer, and processing foods.” However, a new wave of expansion in Texas’ hydrogen market is underway. This expansion will increase the state’s hydrogen production capacity for the aforementioned purposes as well as for use as an energy source. For
example, Chevron seeks “to make low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia” while ExxonMobil wants “to build hydrogen pipelines and fueling stations for trucks.”
